The “REAL” South Park, CO

There’s been a lot of press lately about the creators of South Park, an animated show on Comedy Central, and their portrayal of certain religions and religious “icons” on their show.  The TV show is based in a rural Colorado town, and has been on the air for about 11 years stirring controversy and poking fun at everyone and everything.  However, there actually is a city of South Park in Colorado, and it’s not too far from some world-class rafting!  Located in Fairplay, South Park City is a restored town depicting life in central Colorado during the 1880’s Gold Rush (www.southparkcity.org).  With over 30 authentic buildings and tens of thousands of artifacts, you can get a feel for the economic and social  aspects of life in a former mining “Boomtown”.  So, the next time you’re on Hwy. 285 near Fairplay on your way to raft the fabulous Arkansas River, take a few minutes out to visit the REAL South Park and who knows, you might even learn a thing or two!
